LOW BACK PAIN
Evidence-and the experiences of millions of chiropractic patients-suggests that chiropractic, in many cases, is the most effective approach to reducing pain and helping recovery, especially within the first month of symptoms.  Low back pain symptoms are often blamed on poor muscle tone in the back, muscle tension or spasm, sprains, ligament or muscle tears, or vertebral problems.  Because vertebrae protect the nerves within the spinal column, even a small disturbance to the spine can profoundly affect nerve tissue.  Bulging or ruptured discs irritating spinal cord nerves can also cause lower back pain.  This condition may cause buttock or leg pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in the legs.  Degenerative changes in the vertebrae also irritate or inflame delicate nerves in the spinal bones.

Chiropractic adjustments find the source of the problem and correct it, not just cover it up with pain medication and muscle relaxers.  Chiropractors restore normal position and motion of the spinal bones, removing the source of irritation on the surrounding nerves.

SCIATICA
Sciatica is a severe pain in the leg caused by compression, irritation, or inflammation of the sciatic nerve.  The sciatic nerves are the largest and longest nerves in your body.  The nerves leave the spinal cord from the lower spine, travel down each leg, then divide into many smaller nerves that travel to the thigh, knee, calf, ankle, foot and toes.  Symptoms of sciatica vary.  The pain will often come and go, or be constant for a period and then subside for hours or days.  Some people experience a dull ache or numbness, while others have intense “shooting pains” down the leg into the foot and toes.  Misalignment of the lower vertebrae, disc herniation, and spinal degeneration are a few major causes of sciatica.  The chiropractic approach to treating sciatica is to find the source of the nerve irritation and relieve the pressure causing the pain.  By correcting the source of the problem, the body can heal naturally without nerve interference.

HEADACHES
Headaches can be triggered by physical or emotional stress, toxic fumes, certain foods, preservatives, alcohol, bright light, trauma, hormonal changes, too much or too little sleep, allergies, blood pressure, or misalignment of spinal bones in the neck and upper back.  There are several different types of headaches, including tension, vascular, and cervicogenic headaches.  Dr. Obert has had great success finding the causes behind headaches as well as relieving the immediate pain.  He can help determine whether a physical or structural problem may be involved and, if so, correct it.  A series of spinal adjustments to return misaligned spinal bones to a more normal position and motion can relieve pressure on irritated nerve roots.  Dr. Obert can also help in identifying headache triggers, suggest exercises, therapy and lifestyle modifications to help avoid future headaches.

Healthy Children

As a concerned parent, you no doubt wonder if your child is as healthy as possible.  Many factors contribute to your child’s overall health.  A major component is the communication between your child’s brain and body, a vital link controlling growth, repair, and function of every tissue and organ in the body.  Diet, exercise, rest, and emotional and spiritual support are other important factors.
Chiropractic recognizes the importance of each of these factors as they contribute to your child’s health.  Dr. Obert specializes in correcting subluxations, a condition of neurological disturbance created when vertebrae are out of their natural alignment.  By having subluxations corrected throughout childhood, your child will have a better opportunity to be as healthy as possible.

WHEN SHOULD YOUR CHILD BE CHECKED FOR SUBLUXATIONS?
Newborn infants should be checked within hours after birth.  The birth process, even under natural and controlled conditions, is potentially traumatic.  During the pushing stage of labor, the spine, particularly the neck, may be injured as the baby is compressed and pushed down the birth canal.  The most frequent subluxation experienced by newborns results from the pulling, twisting, and compression of the infant’s spine during birth.

Although birth subluxations may cause immediate symptoms, such as respiratory depression, there may be far-reaching effects that are manifested for years.  The child’s ability to fight against disease, for example, may be lowered.  Colds, ear infections, colic, and other illnesses may result.

Subluxations may also interfere with internal organ function, resulting in the inability to produce chemicals responsible for raising and lowering body temperature as needed.  Research has also indicated that the body’s immune response in the production of anti-viral and anti-bacterial agents to fight infection is greatly compromised due to vertebral subluxations.

EAR INFECTIONS
Infection of the middle ear, or acute otitis media, is a common symptom in childhood.  In fact, it is the most common cause of fever in the early years of life.  Research shows that upper respiratory infections, including otitis media, may be caused by improper drainage of the deep neck lymphatics.  In these cases, a doctor looking in your child’s ear will see a buildup of fluid behind the ear drum, with the inside of the ear appearing inflamed and ear drum bulging.  Often, the typical prescription of oral antibiotics is not effective in reducing the fluid build-up.  The fluid build-up is an inviting environment for bacteria and viruses.  Improved drainage of this fluid is caused by a combination of events.  Increased muscle tone or muscle spasms, coupled with a child’s already small drainage system, appear to be major factors.

Instead of treatment that tries to kill the bacteria or virus, chiropractic uses a more natural approach to restore normal drainage of the ears and neck lymphatics.  Chiropractic adjustments applied to the neck corrects subluxations, restores normal function, and reduces or eliminates the tense neck musculature responsible for blocking the normal drainage of fluid.  As this obstruction to the lymphatic system is removed, the excess fluid in the ears drains, therefore removing the opportunity of bacterial and viral infections.  Once normal drainage is restored, the recurrence of ear infections is diminished or nonexistent.

BED-WETTING
The free flow of nerve communication from the brain, through the spinal column, to all parts of the human body, is the basis upon which the body governs itself and all its functions.  Subluxations in the spinal column cause abnormal posture, which applies tension on vertebrae, muscles, ligaments and tendons.  This increased tension interferes with blood flow to internal organs.  Lack of oxygen to cells, tissues, and organs causes dysfunction and disease.  Subluxations may also lead to problems with growth and internal organ function including bladder control.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS A CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENT?
Vertebrae (the bones in your back) fit together so that the nerve supply produced in your brain may filter down your spinal cord and out over your nerves.  This nerve information is responsible for growth, repair, and healing in your entire body.  When vertebrae are out of their natural alignment, nerves become stretched or twisted (commonly referred to as a “pinched” nerve), and this vital communication system in the body is disrupted.

This neurological disturbance is called a subluxation, and it may result in the failure of one or more parts of the body, as well as health in general.  Subluxations can also foster the onset of sickness and disease as the body weakens.  Dr. Obert specializes in the detection and correction of subluxations.  Instead of treating the symptoms of the disease, Dr. Obert corrects the subluxation so that normal body functions may take place.  This is done by laying hands on your back and gently lining up the vertebrae in their natural position.  This process may take weeks or months, depending on the severity of misalignment.  Nerve flow may then be restored throughout the body, and healing can take place.  As your body heals, the symptoms begin to diminish.

WHAT IS A “SLIPPED DISC?”
Discs are the cartilage-like cushions between your vertebrae.  They serve as shock absorbers and allow your back to turn and bend normally.  Because each disc is attached to the vertebrae above and below, there is no way for them to actually “slip” out of place.  But trauma or injury to the spine can cause discs to tear, bulge, herniate or even rupture.  These conditions are often extremely painful due to the additional pressure on the surrounding nerve tissues.

Each case is different so results cannot be guaranteed, however many patients have found relief in chiropractic care and are happy to avoid surgery or dependency on pain medication.
